🗣️When it comes to workouts, if your inner voice sounds like…

🔸 “Looks like you fell off the wagon again.”
🔸 “Ugh, you’re so inconsistent.”
🔸 “Why can’t you just stick to a routine?”

… it’s time to change that.

🔁 For me, consistency used to mean aiming for a rigid routine, and then shaming myself when I inevitably had to change it… to the point that I just quit altogether.

🌿 Now, I’m learning that consistency just means coming back. No matter how long it’s been since I last worked out, or meditated, or practiced some other habit, I can ALWAYS return to it.

‼️So, if you’ve been beating yourself up about a lack of consistency or “falling off the wagon,” just know this:

THERE IS NO WAGON.

🛣️ Self-care is a journey. And just like a road trip, you’re going to have fast and slow periods, pauses, speed bumps, and rest stops.

💟 Whether it’s working out or some other behavior you’re trying to adopt, hear this: you are WORTHY of giving self-compassion to yourself, and I encourage you to find a way to do just that today.

➡️ When you’re living with chronic pain, “going hard” isn’t always an option… nor is it wise to try and do so all the time.

‼️ Friend, it’s so so important to meet your body where it is on any given day. Through studying the mind and body, plus my own personal experience, I’ve learned that effective self-care for chronic pain calls for a few ingredients:

1️⃣ MOVEMENT: Practicing movements that benefit your joints and tissues can certainly help! But, that’s not the whole picture.

2️⃣ BRAIN-BASED WORK: Sometimes, you have to reset your nervous system with mindfulness practices (like timed breathing) before your whole body and mind can efficiently take on more physical movement.

3️⃣ REST: Yup! Rest is just as important as work for both your body and your mind (aka your nervous system, aka the system that makes you feel chronic pain in the first place).

💗 I get it: you’re tired of chasing chronic symptoms. It feels like a never-ending hamster wheel-- and my friend, it’s time to try something new.

Real talk, though, I do Pilates so I have the confidence to hit some trails and explore. This is such a huge part of my why, and what a beautiful reminder this trip has been so far.

🚨 News flash: A movement routine doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.

💻 I created online mat Pilates classes so you can experience a mindful workout session from home or from anywhere. Each class is $25 and 50 minutes long, and all you need is an internet connection (no props, special equipment, etc).

When you’re living with chronic pain, even the simplest of tasks can lead to a flare-up.

🌿 Are you ready to change that?! Here are a few ways to stay extra mindful while you’re working on spring cleaning, gardening, or household tasks.

🌼 When you’re picking things up or working close to the ground, stand with your feet wide, then hinge at your hips and squat deeply. Keep your spine straight and let your glutes (booty), hamstrings (backs of thighs), and quads (fronts of thighs) do all the work.

🌼 When your body starts to ache, take a break! It really is that simple. Your body knows what it needs- listen to it and rest periodically to prevent injuries from overworking.

🌼 Stretch your legs! Remember all that beautiful squatting you did to pick things up? 😉 Your legs will need some release and lengthening. A foam roller session is also a great idea after a day or weekend of hard work!

🌼 Use a massage ball on your back. Stand up against a wall and roll out any sore spots. You can also use the ball on your neck, shoulders, and pecs (ask me how!) to keep your upper body loose.

Exercise is such a chore.

Or is it?

🔩 After my spinal fusion as a teenager and into my young adulthood, I saw exercise as something I “had to” do— and something that was going to be infinitely harder for me because of my spine.

💡It never once occurred to me that maybe I just hadn’t found the right _form_ of exercise.

☀️ Pilates probably saved my life. Before I learned how to work out AND honor my limits at the same time, I used to leave every workou thinking, “My body doesn’t move like a ‘normal’ one, and this all sucks.”

➡️ I hated constantly being faced with some new move that wasn’t accessible in my body.
➡️ I hated the fact that I felt clunky and ungraceful.
➡️ I hated working out, and I hated my body.

🌀 And one can only live with that self-hatred for so long before it becomes a dangerous mental and physical spiral.

📈 It wasn’t until I learned how to use equipment and props and creativity that I started to see my spinal fusion as an asset, not a barrier. It’s not always a walk in the park, but having a “unique” body has pushed me to grow in ways I never could’ve imagined.

🌼 Including finding actual JOY in movement.
